Courtesy of ABC;  It was an ambitious project: to introduce a new sport to a country that was on the brink of collapse after years of civil unrest, and in doing so, to try and provide new hope to an entire generation.

But that’s what happened in Solomon Islands with Futsal.

And now, 14 years later, it’s the country’s national sport and is producing players that are beating their Australian opponents.

Its under-12 team was welcomed back as heroes to Honiara after a recent win at the National Futsal Championships in Sydney.

The audio recording in this post is a radio interview discussing the impact that Futsal had on the Solomon Islands during a difficult period of their history and after. The sport is bringing hope and joy to the nation, especially during their recent world cup qualification and journey to Colombia where the country who finished bottom of their group still returned home as heroes.
