On the 31st of May, the Irish Football Association finally got the go ahead to play futsal again. UEFA told the association that they had to receive a Champions League nomination by the 24th of June. Therefore, after much discussion, a decision was made to have a Cup competition, the Northern Ireland Foundation Futsal Cup.

The competition is going to take place between the 3rd and 20th of June at the Shankill Road Leisure centre. Competing for the trophy and a place in Europe’s pinnacle of club futsal, the UEFA Futsal Champions League are:

  1. Afrimeripean Futsal Club
  2. Belfast All Blacks
  3. Belfast United
  4. Belfast Iberians
  5. Glentoran
  6. Omagh Futsal
  7. Rosario
  8. Sparta Belfast
  9. World United

The interesting addition to the competition is Glentoran, who are a semi-professional football club, the club was founded in 1882. The club play in the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) Premiership otherwise known as the Danske Bank Premiership which is the top division of Northern Irish football. Could this be the start of seeing more of the established football clubs entering into futsal? We look forward to seeing who registers to enter the new season.
