After four consecutive terms in office, the FMA founding member leaves behind a lasting legacy of growth, professionalism, and progress for futsal in Malta.

The Futsal Malta Association has announced that President Mark Borg will not seek re-election at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a 15-year involvement at the forefront of Maltese futsal.

A founding member of the FMA since its establishment in 2011, Borg has served four consecutive terms as president, overseeing a period of major transformation for the sport both domestically and internationally.

During his tenure, Maltese futsal experienced significant growth in professionalism, visibility, and competitiveness. Under Borg’s leadership, the local game progressed from the margins of the sporting landscape to earning national recognition and increased respect on the European stage.

One of the most notable achievements during this period was the rise of Maltese clubs in European competition. From occupying the lower end of continental rankings in 2011, Malta’s futsal representatives climbed into the top 12 in Europe and reached the UEFA Futsal Champions League Elite Round, reflecting the steady development of the domestic game and increased competitive standards.

Commercial growth also played a key role in the evolution of the sport. The FMA secured partnerships with major local sponsors, including Enemed, helping to reshape the financial structure of futsal in Malta. These sponsorship agreements enabled the association to remove registration fees for clubs, creating a more accessible and competitive league environment.

Innovation remained a central feature of Borg’s presidency. The introduction of the Enemed Futsal Awards Gala Night provided formal recognition for players and coaches, while the launch of the National Women’s Futsal League marked an important step forward for inclusivity and the development of the women’s game in Malta.

As he prepares to step aside at the end of the season, Borg stated that he hopes his departure will allow for a period of regeneration within the association, opening the door for new leadership, fresh ideas, and continued progress for futsal in Malta.

At Futsal Focus, we would also like to express our sincere appreciation to Mark Borg for his continued support of our platform over the years. His passion for promoting futsal in Malta has always been evident. We thank him for his contribution to the growth of the game and wish him every success in the future.
