CONMEBOL Copa América Futsal 2024: A Fierce Battle Unfolds as Teams Vie for Glory and FIFA Futsal World Cup Spots

The stage is set for an exhilarating battle as ten South American teams, representing CONMEBOL Member Associations, gear up for the prestigious CONMEBOL Copa América Futsal 2024. The tournament, organized into two groups of five teams each, promises fierce competition, with the top two teams from each group earning coveted spots in the Semifinals.

The highly anticipated Group Phase draw unfolded on Friday, January 12, at the Paraguayan Olympic Committee headquarters in Luque, Paraguay. The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 2 to February 10, marking the fourteenth edition of this esteemed competition that has been a mainstay since 1992.

Brazil, with an impressive ten titles, stands as the dominant force, closely followed by Argentina with three championships. Both nations were drawn together in Group B along with Uruguay (where futsal was created) whose best performance in a Copa América was in 1996 and 2008, where they lost in the final to Brazil (8-1 and 6-2). In 1995, 1998, and 2000, they secured third place, while finishing fourth in 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2017. The other two nations are Peru and Bolivia.

Speaking to the CBF website, Coach Marquinhos Xavier evaluated Brazil’s opponents and revealed the objectives for the competition.

“It’s a balanced group, but there are two qualifying positions for the World Cup in each group, so our goal, in this first moment, is to qualify for the World Cup. This Copa América is mixed with a qualifier, so it has an even more connotation important. Our first objective is to qualify and the second is to win the championship.”

“We know the difficulties we will face, they are competent opponents, but we also have a lot of confidence in our preparation and our technical condition, given that Brazil has been making important preparations throughout this cycle, aiming for the World Cup”, he concluded.

In Group A, Paraguay and Venezuela emerge as the frontrunners for securing the top spot, but Colombia, a team with a World Cup qualification in 2012 and hosting experience in 2016, adds an intriguing dynamic to the mix. Peru and Bolivia, who have consistently landed in the 8th or 9th position across multiple editions, are expected to continue along a similar trajectory in this competition.

Competition Format:

The CONMEBOL Copa América™ Futsal 2024 is divided into two phases: the Preliminary phase (group stage) and the Final phase (contests for 9th, 7th, and 5th places, semifinal, contest for 3rd place, and the ultimate final). Each phase unfolds through a single round of matches, ensuring intense and dynamic encounters.

In the Preliminary phase, the ten teams are distributed into two groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals. The remaining teams in each group will engage in battles for positions from 5th to 9th place, with the third-placed teams competing for 5th place, the fourth-placed teams for 7th place, and the fifth-placed teams for 9th place.

Participating Member Associations (AMPs) for the CONMEBOL Copa América Futsal 2024 include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
