Western United is continuing its expansion across the West of Victoria with the acquisition of elite futsal club, Western Wolves.

The Wolves currently play in Series Futsal Victoria Men’s and will now be under the name and colours of  A-League Football Club Western United going forward.

The acquisition continues Western United’s ambition to reach as many people in the West as possible and to invite all football lovers to be able to wear the Green and Black.

As well as the current Series Futsal Victoria Men’s team, the Club will seek to expand into Women’s and Youth competitions as well as junior divisions from Under 8’s to Under 16’s for boys and girls in the future.

Western United CEO Chris Pehlivanis is optimistic about the possibilities that this will bring to create further growth for the Club.

“We are extremely excited by this opportunity to step into the futsal space and to expose the Western United brand to a new audience,” he said.

“From the beginning, our ambition was to be a brand that had a vast footprint across different competitions for as many athletes as possible to represent Western United. We have now expanded into the A-League Women with great success, we have junior academy pathways for boys’ and girls’ football and now the next step was to venture into futsal.

“Futsal is an important and often overlooked part of the football landscape. Many talented young footballers are playing futsal and are building skillsets that can also translate to regular football.

“I am looking forward to seeing the first Series Futsal Victoria match in our Green and Black and I am energised by the countless opportunities that we can build from this.”

Futsal Oz Founder and CEO Peter Parthimos expressed his excitement at seeing Western United enter into the competition.

“This is massive news and we are very excited to welcome Western United FC to Series Futsal 2023,” he said.

“The club did an amazing job coming into the toughest futsal league in Oceania and winning over the hearts and minds of the neutrals.

“We can’t wait to see the Green and Black courtside on Friday night.”

The team is coached by Gui Costa, a vastly experienced futsal coach who has previously coached Australian men’s and women’s national teams.

In a period of transition, Western Wolves has played 10 matches and sits in seventh place on the table, with Western United now coming in and looking to propel the side up the Series Futsal Victoria table. The side is also in the Round of 16 of the Clubs Cup.

Western United will take its first steps into the competition on Friday night at 10:30pm AEDT, taking on Campbellfield FC at Series Futsal Arena in Thomastown.

All matches are streamed live and free on the WeFroth app, which also features competition ladders and fixtures.
